When Narcissus was born, the prophet Tiresias foretold: “He will live a long life, if he never recognizes himself.” Because of this prophecy, his mother kept him away from mirrors and reflective waters.Narcissus grew up so beautiful that everyone adored him, yet he never understood why, having never seen his own face. Until one day, he knelt beside a lake and for the first time, saw his reflection. Enchanted, he could not leave, gazing until he withered away. From that spot bloomed a pure flower, its head bowed toward the water, just as Narcissus once bowed to his reflection. That flower is the daffodil, also called Narcissus.
The myth of Narcissus is often seen as a warning against vanity. And it is. But it’s not just about beauty.
